Hooked on Crochet: More Stories, More Stitches & More Reasons to Create

There are many ways to enjoy a craft. You can learn it, practise it, teach it to someone else, or simply spend a few quiet hours doing something you love. But when people come together to create, a craft can become an experience of its own.
That is exactly what made Hooked on Crochet, our International Crochet Day celebration at The hab by Usha, so special.
The day was filled with yarn, crochet hooks and beautiful flowers taking shape, but what stood out most were the people behind those creations. Everyone came with a different level of familiarity with crochet and a different way of experiencing the event. Some knew what they were doing, some were still figuring out their stitches and some were simply enjoying the opportunity to try something new.
As we moved around the space, we saw people learning from the experts, helping one another, concentrating on their work and enjoying the excitement that comes with creating something by hand. Each table had its own little story unfolding, and every crochet flower slowly became a reflection of the person making it.
When You Come Back to a Craft You Love
Sometimes, learning something does not end with the first class or the first project. You return to it because you enjoy how it makes you feel.
One participant came to Hooked on Crochet already familiar with the basics. She had experienced crochet before, but being part of a guided project with other people gave her an opportunity to look at the craft in a different way.
Working at home has its own comfort. You can take your time, pause whenever you like and continue whenever you want. But working on a project in a shared space brings a different kind of energy. There are people around you, conversations happening, experts to guide you and a little motivation that comes from seeing everyone working towards the same goal.
What began as one project became an opportunity to discover more possibilities within a craft she already enjoyed.
For her, crochet has always been about more than the final product. There is something calming about sitting down with yarn and a hook, concentrating on each stitch and letting the process take over for a while. Hooked on Crochet gave her a chance to experience that feeling once again, while also stepping out of the usual routine of crocheting at home.
“I have learned basic crochet here at The hab, and I have practised a little at home too. But it felt like a revision class, and meeting people and working within a set time frame made the experience quite different from doing it at home. It was exciting to approach a project in a different way. I was also looking at the crochet samples they had put out, and now I’m really excited to try more of them. For me, crochet is really meditative. Whenever I sit down to crochet, I feel calm and centred. This experience reaffirmed my love for crochet.”

When Something New Begins With a Single Stitch
For someone trying crochet for the first time, even the simplest project can feel like a completely new experience.
Another participant arrived at Hooked on Crochet without previous experience in crochet. Everything from handling the hook to understanding the stitches was part of the learning process. But that is where the beauty of a guided creative experience comes in. You do not have to know everything before you begin. You simply need the opportunity to ask, try, make mistakes and try again.
With experts around to guide her through the process, what could have felt unfamiliar soon became enjoyable. There was no pressure to get everything perfect. Instead, the focus was on learning, creating and enjoying the experience.
By the time the crochet flower began to take shape, it was no longer just about learning a new technique. It was about discovering how enjoyable it can be to sit down, concentrate on something creative and see an idea slowly come to life.
Sometimes, a new hobby does not begin with a long-term plan. It begins with curiosity, a little guidance and the decision to give something a try.
“It was my first time trying crochet, and I really enjoyed it. The experts helped me very well, and they were very kind and sweet. It was a fun experience to be a part of and learn something new. Discovering a new hobby was really helpful, enjoyable and a great stressbuster.”

When Creativity Finds the Youngest Hands
One of the most delightful parts of Hooked on Crochet was seeing how naturally curiosity can lead to creativity.
Among the participants was a young maker who took on the challenge of creating her own crochet flower with the help of the The hab team. There was something particularly special about watching her work through the steps and see the project slowly come together.
When you are learning something new, every part of the process can feel exciting. The yarn in your hands, the movement of the hook, the first few stitches and then that moment when you suddenly realise that you are actually making something.
Her finished flower was more than just something she made during the event. It was the result of giving something new a chance and discovering that creativity can begin at any age.
“Today I came to The hab for International Crochet Day and made this beautiful crochet flower. I really enjoyed it, and the people here helped me.”

One Event, Many Ways to Create
What made Hooked on Crochet memorable was not that everyone followed the same steps and made the same flower. It was that every person experienced those steps differently.
For some, it was an opportunity to revisit a craft they already enjoyed. For others, it was the excitement of trying something completely unfamiliar. And for some, it was simply the joy of discovering what they could create with their own hands.
The crochet flower may have been the project of the day, but the real beauty was in everything that happened while making it. The questions asked, the guidance shared, the concentration on each stitch, the little moments of excitement and the satisfaction of seeing the final piece come together.
That is what events at The hab are really about. They create a space where people can explore a hobby, learn at their own pace and enjoy the experience of making something themselves.
Every Stitch Has a Starting Point
A crochet hook can bring someone back to a craft they already love. It can introduce someone to a hobby they have never tried. It can also simply give someone a reason to spend a few hours creating.
And that is what we saw at Hooked on Crochet.
Different people walked into the same event, but each person left with something slightly different a new idea, a new skill, a renewed interest in crochet or simply the happiness that comes from making something by hand.
Because sometimes, the most meaningful part of a creative experience is not what you make at the end.
It is what makes you want to pick up the hook and create again.
