Hooked on Crochet: More Than Just an Event, It’s About Creativity, Connections & Memories

There is something special about creating something with your own hands.

A simple strand of yarn slowly becomes a pattern, a shape and eventually something you can hold with pride. At The hab by Usha, we celebrated that feeling on International Crochet Day with Hooked on Crochet  a day dedicated to creativity, learning and the joy of crochet.

The event brought together crochet enthusiasts and curious first-time makers, from little children discovering the craft to adults who have been enjoying handmade creations for years. Everyone came with their own story, their own pace and their own reason for picking up a crochet hook.

But there was one thing that brought everyone together: the excitement of making a beautiful crochet rose with their own hands.

Throughout the event, we saw concentration turn into smiles, unfamiliar stitches turn into beautiful patterns and individual creations turn into memories.

Here are some of the stories and moments that made Hooked on Crochet special. 1.  From The hab to Home: Taking Memories Along With Every Creation

Not every participant came to Hooked on Crochet to learn crochet for the first time. Some already knew their way around a crochet hook and were familiar with the rhythm of working with yarn.

One such participant joined the event with her existing love for crochet. As she worked on her rose, she wasn't only focused on the finished creation. She was also paying attention to the little details that made the experience special.

At one point, she paused her work and took out her phone.

Instead of photographing only the finished rose, she began capturing the process around her  the yarn she was working with, the rose taking shape in her hands, the instruction sheet that guided her through the process and the small details of the workshop that would otherwise simply become part of the day's memory.

That was the moment we captured her in a candid photograph.

She was busy photographing her own creative process, completely unaware that someone else was photographing her while she did it.

And there was something beautifully familiar about that moment.

When we enjoy an experience, we often want to hold on to more than just the final result. We want to remember what we were working with, what we were learning, what the process looked like and how it felt to be there.

For her, the yarn, the unfinished rose and the instruction sheet were not just things lying on the table. They were little pieces of her experience at Hooked on Crochet.

The half-made rose showed that the creation was still in progress. The instruction sheet captured the learning behind it. And the yarn represented where the whole process began.

By taking those photographs, she was documenting the journey as it happened.

And perhaps that is one of the most beautiful things about handmade crafts the finished piece is only one part of the story. There is an entire experience behind it: choosing the yarn, learning or revisiting a technique, making mistakes, trying again, watching the shape come together and finally seeing the creation take form.

Her candid moment reminded us that sometimes, the process is worth remembering just as much as the finished rose.

Because years later, when she looks back at those photographs, she may not only see a crochet rose.

She may remember the yarn in her hands, the table in front of her, the instructions beside her and that particular day when she chose to spend a few hours creating something with her own hands.

She wasn't just photographing what she made. She was collecting the little moments that made the making memorable.

2. The Walk-In Customer Who Became Part of Our hab Family

There are some faces you begin to recognise at The hab.

Then there are those you start looking forward to seeing.

For 14 years, one of our participants has been walking through our doors for workshops, events and new creative experiences. And over time, she has become a part of our hab family.

From one workshop to the next, her excitement remains the same. There is always something she wants to learn, something she wants to try and another creative experience she is ready to explore.

What we love most is that she continues to make time for herself.

She reminds us that hobbies aren't only for a particular stage of life. Learning isn't something we should stop doing as we grow older. And making time for yourself isn't a luxury  it is a beautiful way of staying connected to the things that bring you joy.

Her enthusiasm is a quiet inspiration to all of us, especially younger people who sometimes feel that responsibilities, work or the pace of life mean putting their hobbies aside.

She shows us that it is never too late to pick up something new.

Never too late to return to something you love.

And never too late to give yourself a little “me time.”

After nearly 14 years, she still walks into The hab with the same curiosity: “What can I learn next?”

Today's Hooked On Crochet event was too good. I enjoyed it a lot & i got the opportunity to learn this beautiful Crochet Rose. I am so thankful to the hab we all get the chance to learn new things here.

3. Little Hands & Creative Mind

Crochet is often seen as a craft that takes patience and practice, but one young participant at Hooked on Crochet showed us that curiosity can take you a long way.

She had learned the basics of crochet by watching YouTube videos and came to the event excited to try making a crochet flower herself. With a crochet hook in her small hands and colourful yarn in front of her, she carefully followed each step and enjoyed watching the flower slowly take shape.

And the most wonderful part? Despite having the smallest hands in the room, she was the first one to complete her crochet rose.

Her excitement and proud smile said it all. What started as something she had learned by watching videos had turned into something she could create with her own hands.

Her little crochet rose was more than just a flower. It was a beautiful reminder that creativity has no age limit sometimes, all it takes is a little curiosity, a little practice and the joy of trying something new.

Crochet Brought Us Together

One of the most beautiful parts of Hooked on Crochet was seeing people of different ages come together around something as simple as yarn and a crochet hook.

A child discovering a new craft.

An adult learning something they had always wanted to try.

A crochet enthusiast enjoying time with fellow makers.

Different generations, different experiences and different stories but one shared creative experience.

The event reminded us that creativity doesn't belong to any particular age group. There is always something new to learn, something new to make and someone new to inspire.

And sometimes, all it takes is a little yarn and a crochet hook to bring people together.

One Rose. Many Stories.

Every rose made at Hooked on Crochet may have looked beautiful on the outside, but behind each one was a different journey.

Different hands made them.

Different people learned the stitches.

Different stories unfolded around them.

Yet every participant left with the same feeling the joy of creating something with their own hands.

At The hab by Usha, we believe that creativity is best experienced when it is shared, explored and made your own.

Hooked on Crochet was one such experience and these roses will always carry a little piece of that day with them.
